For those of you who know, I am a security officer at our local museum. I would just like to point out a few things to people who come to public establishments like zoos and other tourist attractions. After working a few months here, there are few things that can really get to me anymore. Okay, that’s a lie. On a daily basis I go to my co-workers because someone did something that upset me. I have yet to learn to just let everything go.
So, let’s have a heart to heart.
- I don’t come to work with any intention of making anyone’s day horrible. In fact, I come to work ready to assist people with whatever they need. I love coming to work and hanging out with my co-workers and chatting it up with patrons. I love listening to insight and helping in general!
- I don’t want to have to be the bad guy and ruin your time at our establishment, but rules are rules. I don’t create the rules, the rules are put in place to protect the establishment, the customers, and the employees. If a security officer or staff member come up to you to kindly remind you of the rules, please don’t give us attitude. We really hate having to talk to you, we really want you to enjoy your time, but our ass is grass if we don’t come up to you if you are getting a little unruly.
- Thank you for coming up and talking to me about the things you see. I love listening to you go off about how amazing exhibits are. You make my day and I remember it always. I don’t mind if you ask my opinion. Especially when you ask about a certain exhibit and you come back to find me just to tell me how much you love it. You seriously make my day.
- By the end of the day, I’m so exhausted and my feet hurt. I have a daughter at home, I go to school full-time, probably have homework, and I’m ready to eat and sleep. If I approach you to give you a 15 minute warning or even let you know we’re closing, please don’t stop at everything on the way back because you missed it. I understand if you missed something, but I can’t leave until you do. I’m not trying to be rude, but by the end of the day I’ve probably been yelled at a million times and am ready to go home and relax with my family.
Thanks for listening to this rant. Sometimes someone has to let off steam and this is my outlet to do so. Thank you to those who treat those in customer service well. It’s a hard industry to be in. In fact, all industries have their ups and downs. If you can relate, don’t hesitate to re-blog or share my post.
